Seeing Indonesia Through Poetry

“Aku Melihat Indonesia”

One of the most memorable moments of our Independence Day celebration on 17 August 2026 was a powerful poetry performance of Aku Melihat Indonesia, created by Indonesia’s first president, Ir. Soekarno. The poem was beautifully read and declaimed by Kenzie Alexander Wang and Neena Visakha Guntoro, whose stunning performance was filled with deep emotion and sincerity. Through their expressive voices and heartfelt delivery, the students brought Soekarno’s vision of Indonesia to life, inviting everyone to see the nation not simply as a place but as something deeply felt in its landscapes, music, people, culture, and spirit of freedom.

The performance became a touching reminder of what Independence Day truly means. As Kenzie and Neena portrayed the poem’s powerful message, the audience was encouraged to reflect on the beauty and diversity of Indonesia and the profound love for the nation that lies at the heart of its heritage. Their performance demonstrated how poetry can connect generations, allowing the words and vision of our first president to resonate with young Indonesians today. It was a proud and heartfelt moment that beautifully captured the spirit of merdeka and reminded us all that Indonesia is not only the land we live in; it is a part of who we are. (Belfin P.S.)
